Posey a Grizzley? Interesting...

Hi there, and welcome to the first entry in my blog. I don't have a paticularly steady internet connection in my house currently, so the posts on here might be a bit sporadic at times, so my apologies in advance for that. Hopefully, I can keep you hooked so that you'll put up with this until I get a new internet provider. With that out of the way, let's move on to the actual baseball discussion, which is why we are all here.

I watched the All-Star game today, had a good time seeing Lincecum pitch against the American League, even though he struggled. I've noticed that Lincecum tends to overthrow in "big" games, which leads to him leaving the ball up and pitching well below his capability. For examples of this, look at: His first big league start, Opening day this year, and now, today. There is no need for concern about this, just something I noticed. The All-Star game is a source of frustration for me, because it's a good concept screwed up by a terrible commissioner. I could write multiple blogs about ways to fix the All-Star game or reasons why I hate Bud Selig, but this is a Giants blog, and I will try to discuss strictly Giants issues here. Case in point: more interesting than the All-Star game for me today was the news that Buster Posey was called up to Fresno.

Now, for those of you who have been living under a rock, or simply don't follow the Giants on any more than a casual level, Buster Posey was the Giants first round selection in last season's draft, and the number five pick overall. Posey is, for lack of a better term, a beast. He can hit for both power and average, he is very athletic, has all the defensive tools to play catcher, and from all reports is a good guy off the field as well.

With that being said, the fact that he was called up to Fresno is very surprising to me. You see, Posey was playing for the Giants A Ball affiliate, the San Jose Giants. He skipped right past the Double A squad in Connecticut, and went right to the Triple A team in Fresno. Before today, I was thinking the Giants were going to slowly bring Posey along until he was ready for the big league level. However, this move implies otherwise. Triple A is very, VERY close to the Major Leagues when you're talking  about a talent like Posey. Pulling him up to Triple A now would imply that the Giants want him to take over the starting catcher job in San Francisco as soon as next season, with a trip to the bigs this year   of the question.

So what does that mean for fan favorite Bengie Molina? Molina is at an age where he almost assuredly would want a multi-year contract to give him and his family long-term security. But if the Giants are so aggressively promoting Posey, it seems extremely unlikely they would want to sign him for any longer than one year, and even that doesn't seem really probable. Posey has been described as "Russell Martin with more power" by scouts that have seen him, and you don't let that talent rot in Fresno for a year and a half. I can't see into the future, and I can't confirm that Brian Sabean is on board with this logic, but my guess is this; Buster Posey as a Grizzly now means that we are probably seeing our last season of Bengie in a Giants uniform.

Keywords: Bengie Molina, Buster Posey, Fresno Grizzlies, San Francisco Giants
