At 14-22, the Giants need to shape up really quickly, or they are going to disappear into the mucky morass of last place. Only Arizona and Los Angeles are playing decent ball out of the five teams in the Western
Division. They need to score runs! With so many young, not necessarily rookies, occupying starting rolls, perhaps it is time to play some of the older guys (Aurila, 37) on a fairly regular basis, so the young guys can see how it is done. Willie Mays did not became great on sheer talent alone, he watched what his older team mates were doing. They tutored him. He had all the tools though. The only 'old guy' among the regular is Randy Winn, playing his steady right field day in day out, with a day off here and there...The Giants need a blowout with them on the upside. They've been involved in a couple of blowouts this year, but they were on the losing end of both of them. A blowout takes that real big monkey off the back...They need a complete game effort from one of their young pitchers to give the bullpen a rest. Cain or Lincecum seem the best suited for this role, if they would just get some runs...They need to learn to play better ball: Lots of rookie mistakes. There was a mix up in right field about 10 days ago, and Randy Winn admitted that he should have taken charge then and there. There's and old adage/practice that if the outfielder can take it, let him have it!...This is an exciting team, they are fun to watch. They lead the league in steals; I've been a Giants fan for over 40 years and I cannot remember that ever happening, even at this juncture in the season...Giants have played just 22% of their schedule. With 126 games to go, there is plenty of time to work on things, but now would be better than later! May 8, 2008
