Barry Zito

Hey, nothing like snapping out of a five-game slide with some timely hitting! The Giants beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 Tuesday night in the first game of a fresh nine-game home stand after l

er if he keeps hitting around .300 (actually .320 with 10 RBI's to date).

I hope this is the same Barry Zito we will see consistently through the 2010 season. Zito is 3-and-0 with a 1.32 ERA following Saturday's masterpiece (just three hits allowed over 8 innings, three walks, and 10 strikeouts). Even better, Zito out-dueled last year's Cy Young candidate Adam Wainwright. Two runs was just enough for Zito, and thank you Andres Torres for finally getting on track with the bat on this home-stand. His batting average has jumped from about .130 to a respectable .275.

AT LAST, regular season baseball to discuss! I wasn't too shocked by the final roster moves, and like the veteran additions to the bull pen with Mota, and to the starting staff with Wellemeyer.

en to be a valuable bull pen addition as an extra lefty to compliment Jeremy Affeldt.

Barry Zito is earning his keep with yet another strong outing:  7IP, 5H, 2ER, 1BB, AND NINE K'S!  The curve ball looks as sharp as Zito's best when he was with the A's with Hudson and Mulder.  Since the end of May, Zito has gong a respectable 9-and-6 after starting the season 1-and-6.  Last year, Zito started the season 0-and-8, but finished at 10-and-17. Zito's ERA, which had balooned to 5.01 back on July 12th, has since been widdled down to 3.94.

Another wasted effort by Barry Zito, who allowed just one unearned run in six-innings, and continues dropping that ERA since the all-star break well into the low-two's.  He did have six walks - in fact the team issued 13 total walks over 14-innings, and its hard to win any ballgame with those numbers. (Colorado pitchers issued seven walks by the way).  It was certainly a series that Merkin Valdez would like to forget as soon as possible, after surrendering four "earnies" Saturday, and the game-winning grand slam to Ryan Spilborghs Monday.  It wasn't totally his fault thanks to Justin Miller and Brandon Medders' three combined walks issued in the inning.  Three of the runs were charged to Miller, who walked pitcher Adam Eaton during the rally!  Really a great game if it had ended 4-1 after San Francisco's gutsy three-run rally in the top of the 14th.  Eugenio Velez is hopefully waking up a bit after banging out three hits in the game.

ne win after six starts but walking of the mound to standing ovation in the last three home starts, Barry Zito is earning his Giants uniform and his $126 million dollar contract. Zito is winning the fans over with his attitude and string of quality starts. May be I am jumping on the bandwagon a bit too soon, but you can’t help but notice that Zito has his swagger and confidence back from his Oakland A's days. He has canceled out all the distractions (Paris Hilton) and concentrated on his pitching mechanics and his point of release. In his previous three starts he has given up 4 runs (all of which were in two starts vs. dodgers) and has gone 6+ innings.

When the San Francisco Giants held its first full squad work out on Tuesday, there was one thing all the players noticed what was gone: the media.  " That's the biggest thing," infielder Kevin Frandsen  said. "When you walk in here, you can actually walk in here."  With the Bonds era finally ending, the clubhouse can finally relax.  Barry Zito mentioned that some San Francisco players weren't "totally comfortable in their own skin" around Bonds, and reliever Brian Wilson said players will no longer have to walk around "on eggshells."
