Dodgers up, facing Zito.
For anyone interested, the Ducks have tied it 1-1 mid-way through the 2nd period against the Sharks.
Bochy has a man in the bullpen warming up.
Zito just did something I have never in my life seen or even heard of. Kiper said the same thing. The ball slipped completely out of his hand during the pitch and it flew awkwardly in the direction of first. The ump decided to call it a throw to first and therefore and balk. Loretta advanced to second.
The next pitch is a ball. Casey Blake, thought it was ball four, thinking the slipped pitch was a ball. Instead the count is 3-1. The next pitch is a fast ball that lands in the 20th row in the left field bleachers. Dodgers are back in the game.
Juan Pierre lines a single to left as the next batter and that's it for Zito. Merkin Valdez is coming in. Andres Torres came in for Rowand at CF at the same time. Torres is much, much faster than Rowand so he's coming in for defense to hold onto this one run lead.
Zito is standing in the dugout, pretty tense and upset about giving up those runs and hoping his final runner doesn't get in as well.
The 2-2 pitch to Furcal was clearly on the inside corner at the knees, but because Sandoval, our catcher, was waiting for the pitch on the outside of the plate and had to reach to grab the pitch, it's called a ball. Furcal walked on the next pitch. Two on, one out.
Valdez is throwing in the high 90's. Pretty impressive. But so far, not enough. 2-2 to Hudson is lined to left-center for an RBI single. Manny coming up with runners on the corners.
Manny just swung so hard at a big breaking slider down and away that his bat flew out of his hands and struck the backstop. 2-2 pitch grounds through the whole between short and third. Uribe and Renteria were plenty slow trying to get there and they fail miserably. Dodgers take the lead.
The only thing impressive about Valdez impressive right now is speed. Kemp takes mercy on Valdez and bails him out of a 3-0 count, taking a strike then grounding into a double play. Inning over.
